From the encyclical file:
Papal Protection of the Jews
Pope Gregory X, 1278
Gregory greets Christians now and in the future.
He brings his present message into line with the past -- repeating instructions of the Popes concerning Jews from the 6th century.
He commits in strong language to protecting them.
Specifics
No one should baptize a Jew unwillingly
No violence of any kind against Jews (he lists in detail)
No disturbance in their religious ceremonies
(with all these he is repeating the instructions of his predecessors)
testimony of Christians against Jews shall not be valid unless other Jews also testify
Gregory is invoking a medieval legal rule that every man has the right to be judged by his peers.
A similar instruction was given by Louis the Pious in the 9th century.
Then he deals with the canard that Jews stole Christian children to sacrifice them -- both by saying it is untrue because it is against their religion, and by saying that if there should be a case, it should be brought to trial fairly.
Then he rules that Christians stop desecrating Jewish cemeteries by digging up bodies to sell them or hold them for ransom... under pain of excommunication.

There certainly is a lot of bad feeling on both sides in this topic. Jews and liberal Catholics blame the Church, while far-right Catholics seem to justify their hatred by showing Judaism in a bad light.
